3.5/5 We stayed at the Holiday in York for a short break. The hotel's location is excellent and was the main reason we chose it. It's very convenient for exploring the city. However, the hotel itself is showing its age and feels a bit dated. The general maintenance could be better. One specific issue we faced was with the shower; the hot water was inconsistent during peak times, which was frustrating. On a positive note, the staff were very friendly and helpful, which improved our experience. In summary, it's a hotel with a great location and good service, but the facilities need some attention.

Just had a really nice overnight stay with my hubby and 2 of my grandsons in a family room, to be honest I wasn’t expecting to like it after reading some reviews, but it’s honestly a nice hotel in a fantastic location, the room was clean and pleasant, nice bathroom with a very good shower , there was shampoo, conditioner snd lotion too included. The staff were pleasant, breakfast was good with plentiful choices, i would stay again.

Very good hotel. Clean and comfortable. Room was nice and warm. No noise issues. Great central location. We could see Dick Turpins grave from our hotel window!

Not a bad stay, room was a little tired and needed a lick of paint. Shower was blocked and wasn't draining but good location

We were only there for one night, on Tuesday, but they treated us so well. I suffered a minor medical issue at a different location which delayed our return to the hotel and delayed our check out time. Without hesitation they were empathetic and offered a late check out at no charged. We didn't have to catch the train until 8:00 that evening, and they kept our bags, free of charge until we were ready to go, despite that we had to go back to get something out of our bag, and put something in it. They were very kind and impressively professional. The breakfast was quite good and the restaurant staff were also fantastic. The rooms was a good size and very clean. When we head back to York, we will be staying there!

Stayed here for a week last week. Probably my third or fourth stay here over the past couple of years. Whenever I have stayed here, there has always something I can’t quite put my finger on…. Sometimes you come across a hotel, like this one.. it’s a familiar brand so you have a certain level of expectation and then… it just doesn’t sit quite right. For me, this hotel is one of those – it’s in a good location, relatively central, and has decent standards (of service, cleanliness etc) but overall the experience doesn’t quite work. I think, in this case, it’s the detail of the offering – the rooms themselves are fairly basic (basic shower rooms, no in-room fridge etc) and the bar/restaurant area quite compact and limited. Whilst I appreciate this is just my opinion, I think the issue here is likely that the hotel is sitting in the wrong IHG brand – it’s not really like a full Holiday Inn and would be a much better fit as a Holiday Inn Express. Indeed, as a HI Express, this place would work perfectly – it already has the basics down fine and the small bar/restaurant area is perfectly suited. I think, sitting where it does, in the core Holiday Inn brand, that generates a level of expectation that it simply doesn’t live up to. In terms of more specific feedback - overall, it’s probably nearing time for the rooms to have a refurbishment – the décor is looking a little tired these days, possibly dating back in parts to the hotel’s pre-Holiday Inn existence as the independent Hotel 53. The lighting is also a bit odd for a hotel – direct overheads and very little by the way of indirect lighting. There was one small desk lamp which I ended up moving to by the bed. I would also draw attention to the lingering smell of tobacco smoke on some floors and the fact it only has one lift, which seems to be shared between back and front of house, leading to congestion. Location-wise, this hotel does well – it’s only five minutes down the road from the main shopping area, and historical Walmgate is just behind. It’s also closely located near to the grave of a famous highwayman, whom we may not name – his grave being co-located near to Wetherspoons and the County Court; something of which he would surely approve. For food, you’re quite close to the restaurants of Walmgate/Fossgate and also to Spark (the pseudo-Box park), the excellent Pavement Vaults is also just at the end of Piccadilly.

We arrived for a 1 night stay as we were watching a show at the nearby Barbican Theatre, we checked in earlier than the stated time as the room was available, I'd booked 2 rooms and they were nearby each other. Booking in was very smooth and swift, we asked where the theatre was and directions were explained very clearly and a map was also provided. We hadn't booked Breakfast but was told that if we booked it before Midnight it would be cheaper than the following morning. We asked where we could get food from and was shown on the map, we went up to our rooms and WOW what a FANTASTIC standard. Very big and very clean, i love the big Tv at the end of the bed on the wall. We had a safe and a kettle with drinks to use included, we went down to reception and out for dinner. On our return we were greeted by the reception staff who asked if we'd had a good night, we asked if we could get a Hot Drink and thet obliged. I awoke the following morning after a very good sleep and used the shower and bathroom facilities which again were very good, went down to reception and went to book out. We asked about a Taxi and they arranged one for us, I'm back again twice this year and cannot wait. A++++
